Make-up can feel daunting when you are just starting out, but a few straightforward techniques can make the process far easier. By selecting suitable products and applying them carefully, you can achieve a flattering, natural-looking finish that enhances your facial features and boosts self-confidence.

Here are 8 make-up tricks to make your routine easier!

1. Prepare your skin

A polished, even make-up finish starts well before you apply foundation or any other product. Skincare is essential because it helps products adhere better and creates a more natural result. Facial cleansing should therefore be the first and most important step, using a cleanser suited to your skin type.

Next, apply moisturiser and, for daytime make-up, complete the preparation with sunscreen. Primer is also an excellent addition: it helps reduce the appearance of pores, smooths the skin’s texture, extends the wear of your make-up and keeps the finish looking better throughout the day.

2. Foundation, concealer and powder

Selecting products that match your skin tone is crucial for a more natural make-up result. Choose foundation, concealer and powder with care, while also taking your skin’s undertone into account: neutral, warm, cool or olive. You can apply foundation with your fingers, a make-up sponge or a foundation brush; the same options can be used for concealer. Powder, meanwhile, can be applied with either a sponge or a brush.

3. Choose the right colours

If you are new to the world of make-up, it is best to begin with simpler looks and gradually add more detail. Before investing in more elaborate options, try a few small experiments at home. Pastel shades work well for everyday wear, while brighter colours can create modern, bold evening looks.

4. Apply eyeliner

For many people, eyeliner is one of the most challenging stages of make-up because it can smudge easily and it is difficult to make both sides match. However, there is a simple way to avoid this issue: use a felt-tip eyeliner pen and place a mark at the outer corner of the eye, exactly where the line should end. Then, with your elbow resting on a table, create a dotted line along the lash line. Finally, join the dots with one stroke.

5. Use mascara

Mascara is one of the products that does the most to enhance the eyes, but achieving a lovely result requires a good-quality product and correct application. Start as close to the roots of the lashes as possible, then glide the wand towards the tips using gentle movements to spread the product evenly.

After around 45 seconds, apply a second coat to increase the lashes’ volume and length. If the lashes stick together, use a small lash comb to separate them for a more natural, defined finish.

6. Apply blush in the right amount

Peach or pink blush shades are excellent choices for beginners. Apply it to the apples of your cheeks and blend thoroughly to avoid harsh lines. Fuller, fluffier brushes are best for application because they distribute and blend the product well, leaving a more natural effect.

7. Finish with lipstick

Lipstick colours should be selected to complement the rest of your make-up. However, nude and pink shades, or even a tinted lip balm, are good choices for anyone still learning. They are easy to apply and give a healthy-looking finish. Lipstick can be applied straight from the bullet or with a lip brush.

8. Do not use too much product

One of the most common mistakes among people starting to wear make-up is believing that using a large amount of product gives better coverage. In reality, excess product can make the look appear heavy, highlight fine lines and pores, and even affect the overall make-up finish. The best approach is to use small amounts of each product, including foundation, concealer, eyeshadow and blush, building coverage gradually as needed.
