What’s behind the “human washing machine”

The system was created by a company based in Osaka. Its Japanese name, “Mirai Ningen Sentakuki”, roughly translates as “washing machine for the human of tomorrow”. The concept really does resemble an oversized washing machine - except it’s built for people rather than laundry.

The unit is a sealed capsule in which you sit comfortably. Once you step in, the door closes, water is introduced, and a fully automated wash cycle begins. No reaching for shower gel, no rinsing off, no towel afterwards - the system handles it all.

The idea isn’t entirely new. Back in the 1970s, an expo in Osaka presented an early prototype of a body-washing machine. At the time, the concept failed because the technology wasn’t ready. At the heart of the system is a method that uses extremely fine air bubbles. The water inside the capsule is infused with microbubbles of the kind already used in wellness treatments and medical baths.
