How to care for men’s grey hair and keep white strands looking sharp

White strands are no longer viewed only as a sign of ageing; for many men, they’ve become part of their look. More and more people are choosing to embrace grey hair, turning a natural change into a statement of personality. To keep the appearance looking consistently well-groomed, a few habits make all the difference.

According to Lucas Cavalcanti - known as Caval - one of the country’s most influential barbers, grey hair needs a daily care routine. “White strands have different characteristics from pigmented hair. They’re usually drier, more prone to frizz, and they can yellow easily when they don’t get the right care. With a simple routine, you can keep hair stronger and show this look off even more,” he explains.

Prevent yellowing

One of the biggest frustrations for people with white hair is the yellow tint that can develop over time, especially after exposure to sunlight, pollution, sand, seawater, or frequent use of heated styling tools.

To reduce this effect, one recommended step is using a neutralising shampoo once a week. “The product helps keep the tone of the hair looking nicer and more even, but overuse can dry the hair out. The best approach is to alternate it with a moisturising shampoo,” says Caval.

Invest in hydration

Grey hair tends to be drier because the scalp produces less natural oil. On top of that, the hair fibre often has more open cuticles, which makes it easier for water and nutrients to escape - leaving hair feeling rougher, more fragile, and more likely to frizz.

As the head of the Caval Barbershop network, Caval says that a simple routine already delivers noticeable results. “It’s worth choosing a moisturising shampoo and conditioner and adding a weekly treatment mask. Products with nourishing action help replace the lipids in the hair fibre, bringing back softness, shine and frizz control,” he advises.

He also suggests using leave-ins, particularly for anyone who washes their hair every day. “Finishers create a protective film around the hair fibre, reducing moisture loss and shielding strands from damage caused by sun, wind and pollution,” he explains.

Haircut styles that enhance grey hair

Beyond everyday care, picking the right haircut helps bring out white strands and makes the overall look feel more contemporary. In charge of the barbering course at Instituto Embelleze, Caval says that cuts such as a fade and a taper highlight the natural texture of grey hair by creating smooth transitions between lengths. An undercut, meanwhile, emphasises the contrast between shorter sides and a longer top, drawing attention to the shine of white hair.

“For those who prefer something more classic, a side part with a fade is an excellent option. It’s a sophisticated, versatile cut that works brilliantly in professional settings as well as more relaxed occasions,” Caval notes.

For the expert, embracing grey hair doesn’t mean neglecting care. “White strands can communicate elegance, personality and authenticity. The secret is sticking to a care routine and choosing a cut that flatters the shape of the face and each man’s style,” he concludes.
