Grey hair: what the University of Tokyo study says about your body's protection

Spotting your first white strand in the mirror often feels like an alarm bell for ageing. Research from the University of Tokyo, however, points to a very different interpretation. Grey hair may actually be evidence that your body is protecting you.

The discovery that changes what white strands can mean

The work began as an attempt to explain why hair loses its colour over time. A team led by Professor Emi Nishimura at the University of Tokyo set out to map what happens to melanocyte stem cells (McSCs) - the cells that maintain melanin production in hair.

What they found, published in the scientific journal Nature Cell Biology, surprised even the researchers themselves. When the DNA in these cells is badly damaged, the cells mature too early, leave the hair follicle, and the hair loses pigment at that point.

One of the most intriguing results emerged when researchers exposed a separate group of mice to carcinogenic substances - one of the triggers linked to skin cancer. Instead of turning white, these animals’ hairs stayed coloured for longer.

In the mice treated with a carcinogenic substance, melanocyte stem cells remained active inside the follicle. Because they did not go through the “exit” process, those hairs stayed pigmented for a longer period.

The issue is that the same cells, continuing to multiply while carrying DNA damage, ended up encouraging melanoma in the experiments. The researchers link this outcome to a molecular pathway known as p53–p21.

In other words, the very same cell type can take two very different paths depending on the stimulus it receives. Understanding that split is what has the University of Tokyo team excited about the discovery’s potential.

Factors that speed up hair greying

Genetics is not the only influence. Certain everyday habits can increase stress within hair-follicle cells and bring on white strands earlier. Specialists commonly point to unprotected sun exposure, smoking, and long periods of emotional stress.

There is also encouraging evidence that part of this process can be reversed. A study from Columbia University in the United States reported that grey strands returned to their original colour after patients came through intense stress, provided the stem cells were still present in the follicle.

Towards the next chapters of this research

According to Nishimura’s team, the next stage is to explore ways to activate this self-cleaning mechanism without causing pigment loss - something that could help open up new strategies for preventing skin cancer.

Ultimately, each grey hair carries a quiet story of cellular defence. The next time you notice a new white strand, it may be worth thanking your body rather than immediately reaching for hair dye.
