Classic Nail Polishes for Autumn/Winter 2026: Updated Colours to Watch

Classic nail polishes are still a major trend for autumn/winter 2026, but the mood has shifted noticeably compared with recent seasons. Rather than the familiar, predictable takes, this season leans into refreshed shades that feel more polished and full of character-meeting consumers’ appetite for versatile colours that work with everything, yet look more current and interesting.

According to Carol Lucena, an educator and mentor to manicurists and an instructor at Instituto Embelleze, the standout trend right now is exactly this modernisation of well-known tones. “Classics remain strong in winter, but now they show up with new finishes, undertones and a less obvious aesthetic,” she says.

She notes that, for autumn/winter 2026, the palette focuses on elegant colours that are easy to wear, presented in updated versions. “You see this clearly in ranges exploring deep wine shades, sophisticated neutrals, darker greens and contemporary greys. One example is Dailus’s Última Chamada collection, which brings reinterpretations of these classic tones for the season,” she adds.

Between elevated reworks of classic neutrals and richer, deeper colours, the specialist highlights several shades expected to gain momentum in autumn/winter 2026. Take a look.

1. Intense wine and plum tones

Wine shades remain a reliable choice for cold-weather days, but they’re appearing in deeper, more refined versions with violet or brown undertones. The trend moves away from brighter reds towards more elegant shades inspired by plum, merlot and cherry mocha.

2. Elegant browns and coffee tones

Chocolate, cappuccino, mocha and milky coffee are emerging as contemporary alternatives to the season’s traditional dark classics. Browns are showing up with a creamier, more sophisticated feel, reinforcing the quiet luxury aesthetic that continues to dominate the beauty space.

3. Cool beiges and sophisticated neutrals

Neutrals are still going strong, but with a more considered, elevated interpretation. Grey-leaning beiges, off-whites and buttery tones are appearing as minimalist, elegant options for anyone who prefers understated nails without losing a sense of refinement.

4. Contemporary greys

From pale grey through to soft graphite, greyed tones are positioned as one of the season’s most dependable go-tos. Modern and adaptable, they offer an urban alternative to traditional nudes and pair easily with a wide range of winter looks.

5. Moss green and sophisticated olive

Darker greens are continuing to gain ground on nails, especially versions inspired by nature and earthy hues. Moss, olive and military green read as stylish choices for anyone wanting to step away from the obvious classics without going over the top.

6. Petrol blue, navy and midnight

Deep blues are set to be among the key bets for autumn/winter 2026. Sleek and contemporary, petrol, navy and midnight blue work as elegant stand-ins for black, adding depth to the look in a way that feels less expected.

7. Greyed pastels

Even in the colder months, softer colours still have a place-just in more sophisticated, less vivid versions. Washed lilac, muted rose and misty blue appear with grey undertones, bringing a balanced delicacy to the season’s palette.

Beyond colour, finishes are also playing a major role in updating the season’s classics. High shine, gel-like effect, ultra-creamy texture and a mirror-like look are among the leading choices for making nails feel more refined and contemporary.

For Carol Lucena, this direction reflects a shift in beauty buying habits. “Today there’s a bigger search for nail polishes that are versatile and timeless, but that still have personality. The classic is still there-it just comes reinterpreted, more modern and far less basic,” she concludes.
